About the family
Upendo lives with her aunt and her four cousins, one of which has Down's Syndrome. Upendo’s mother has HIV and lives in a place called Moshi, which is about 3 hours away from where Upendo lives. She stays in Moshi with family because she is quite ill. Sadly, Upendo’s father died from AIDS. She lived in a rented house which has two very small rooms for all six family members to sleep. Her aunty sells vegetables to local people but only earns about 60p a day, which is a very poor wage in Tanzania too. Upendo’s aunt is really struggling to bring in enough income to support her large family. She was delighted when we offered a place to Upendo in the orphanage as Upendo will now get regular meals a day and there will be one less mouth to feed at home.
