Why our Secondary School Build is so Important...
Submitted by Nicole Jamison, August 2016.
I remember the first day I went to high school. I was excited, nervous, anxious, happy-aka an emotional rollercoaster (as I’m sure many people can relate). Yet, despite feeling a little overwhelmed, never once did I worry about receiving an education. Not once did I wonder if there would be a school for me to attend. Not once did my gender limit my ability to get an education. I was lucky enough to take my education for granted.
It wasn’t until my summer trip to Kenya that I realized the importance of education, and in particular, the importance of education for women. I learned that the third target within the Millennium Development Goals is to eliminate gender disparity in education. Mom2Mom Africa is committed to addressing this issue in Arusha, Tanzania.
In many areas of Sub-Saharan Africa, young women cannot acquire a proper education due to a lack of infrastructure and resources. Through Mom2Mom Africa’s fundraising, we have been able to provide and support schools that both encourage the attendance of girls and give them a safe environment to learn and grow.
Another problem girls face is their responsibility to collect water for their households. This mainly occurs in low-income households, where families cannot afford proper piping. From my experience in Kenya, this process is very time consuming. With this expectation, many girls do not have time to go to school. At Mom2Mom Africa, we ensure that our schools provide students with access to clean drinking water, offering a simple solution that greatly impacts female attendance.
Equal opportunity education and MDG #3 are extremely important and cannot be restricted to primary school. To give girls a chance at a better life, there must be access to secondary schooling as well. For this reason, one of Mom2Mom Africa’s newest projects is building a secondary school, which will one day give students the option to attend trade school, university or college. In collaboration with the UK-based charity, Made With Hope, we want to raise enough money to help students reach their full potential.
I cannot imagine my life without having my high school experience. Education in secondary school goes beyond books; it gives us the skills, knowledge and social capabilities to pursue our passions. I want girls in Arusha to be given the same opportunities I’ve had. If you want to help our Tanzanian students achieve these goals, please feel free to donate to our online school build campaign. Let’s get our girls into school together!
